I often suck at remembering to give my kids notice that we are going to transition from one thing to another, and oftentimes the sudden (to them) transition makes for fussy kiddos. Eventually I’ll get the hang of this parenting thing.

The Everlight episode of Mythic Quest that just came out is so so good! Highly recommended.
Moderna round one complete!

Expert Apple analysis from someone who’s been an observer, customer, and can of theirs for a long time (me):
If they keep canceling products without introducing new ones, sales will dry up and they will go out of business.

Today in “what part that I’ve been putting off doing for my new app will I attempt to tackle tonight”: a choice between the website, and in-app purchase.
I think the website wins tonight. taphouse.io really needs some updates.
And just as soon as I posted that feeds weren’t generating… it turns out they were but not completely reliably. I think I’ve got a fix in the blog engine to at least increase the feed generation reliability. I think this is all a sign that I should go to bed.
I started to drink from the keg of glory tonight, as I got my iPad blogging workflow up and running! And then I realized that my newly-upgraded blog engine is not generating either my rss or json feeds 😞
So off to debug I go.
The upgrade to Homebrew 3 on my M1 Mac mini appears to have gone sideways, especially with oh-my-zsh installed (which has some hard-coded assumptions about brew’s prefix). Gonna try some custom override plugins to see if that works but my shell feels totally hosed right now.
TIL that iOS apps can handle Shortcuts intents both in an app extension as well as in the app itself (as of iOS 14). That’s pretty cool!
I’m starting to play Mario Kart with my 4.5 year old and he hates it when I win. I gotta say – it’s really hard to lose at 50cc Mario Kart. I find myself doing donuts for large chunks of races 🤣
I’ve spent the past few days getting my blog engine & website up and running with Vapor 4 & Swift 5.3.3. Funnily enough this is in support of my new app that I’m working on (more on that later this month 😀).
It’s super cool to see things come together!
Today at work I took the tooling I’ve been building up to automate our app release process and automated that so that it will run on a regular schedule. I got to learn how to write a Jenkinsfile, and got it all working in just a couple of hours.
Learning new stuff is super fun!
Got any questions you’d like to hear answered on the @xcoders podcast? Send ‘em my way! I’ll be recording a Q&A episode for January next week.
Found a fantastically helpful post from Howard Oakley about building and delivering a CLI tool in Catalina. I think that’s got me where I need to go (for now at least).
Currently at the entrance to the “code singning a Mac CLI tool” rabbit hole. We shall see how deep this one goes, but code signing is always fraught with peril so what’s the worst that could happen?
I really enjoyed talking with @twenty3 for the final Xcoders podcast of 2020. Have a happy new year everyone! xcoders.org/2020/12/3…
I’m selling my 16” MacBook Pro on Swappa. Check it out if you’re in the market! swappa.com/listing/v…
I love it when I’m watching the Seahawks game on YouTube TV with my Apple TV and I get a notification that the game is close with the offer to turn to it. I wish YT integrated better with the system.
TIL that Xcode’s run script build phases have a working directory of the source root. All this time I’d been doing a cd $(SRCROOT)
unnecessarily!
I really enjoyed chatting with @jsavin for the November Xcoders Podcast. We got some good ol' nostalgia in, and he had some good advice for people wanting to excel at consulting (or really engineering for any kind of customer!). Check it out!

Adulting achievement unlocked: finally installed a UPS in my “server closet”. Connected my Synology, Mac mini, and wifi router. Some things just aren’t fun to spend money on but it’s the absolute right thing to do. See also: backup hard disks.
BB8 approves of his new desk mate.
I’ve turned the corner on my static library project and am getting near the finish line. This feels so good to see it come together. #mbnov
The political news of the day is obviously more important in the big picture, but today the Mariners had 2 players under 25 years old win Gold Gloves. I really hope 2021 is the year they astonish the league and make a run with their young guns. #mbnov
